Case

One of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences for me is collaborating with a team of UX designers on projects. This case, in particular, highlights such a teamwork scenario where my two UX colleagues and I joined forces to enhance the search function within the Plick app. The collaborative effort aimed at overcoming technical issues, improving accessibility, and setting higher standards for user experience.

Challenge

The search function in the plick app had a troubled history, marked by technical glitches and user dissatisfaction. Prioritization challenges left the function unfinished, making it essential for our UX team to dive deep into its capabilities.

At plick, we typically leaned on data to inform our design decisions. However, in this particular case, we confronted unreliable data due to a technical constraint. This constraint manifested as each filtration within a search generating a distinct search, resulting in an overwhelming volume of data that lacked connections to its corresponding variables.

Process

Our collaborative journey began with a workshop that not only included brainstorming sessions but actively involved developers. This ensured constant collaboration, allowing us to bridge the gap between theoretical design goals and practical functionality.

Despite encountering unreliable data due to technical constraints, our persistence led to valuable insights. Analyzing user behavior, we determined popular search filters, categorized them, and incorporated various filter types to maintain user engagement.

Solution

The redesigned search function not only enhanced the visual appeal but also addressed functionality issues. We strategically implemented visual hierarchy and information architecture for a clear overview. Categories of filters were introduced, utilizing lists, checkboxes, and text input to cater to diverse user preferences.

A significant improvement was the ability to sort search results directly, eliminating the need for repeated filtering and searches. The design not only cleansed the overall view but significantly enhanced functionality, aligning it with user expectations and standards.
